Welcome to Berkeley Formula Racing’s Autumn 2020 newsletter. We are honored that you are a part of our community, and we are thankful for your continued support. The topics covered in this newsletter are an overview of our Virtual Competition and our success at the end of last season. Also included are an overview of upcoming and ongoing subsystem projects, and our plan to operate in the near future with respect to social distancing.

Virtual Competition

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, SAE elected to replace this year’s physical competitions at Auto Club Speedway and Michigan International Speedway with a single three-category Formula SAE Event, including a Cost Event, Presentation Event, and Design Event. We were very proud to have earned a distinction in the Design Event. The B20 Design Report can be found here. SAE’s event report is here.

Berkeley Formula Racing’s 2020 – 2021 Plans, In Brief

Our team will continue to operate virtually throughout fall semester as we refine B20’s design. We plan to bring an updated version of B20 to FSAE California in the summer of 2021 if it is safe to do so. We’re excited to have the opportunity and the time to make B21 the best it can be. Because we are carrying over many of B20’s designs to B21, we can now pursue projects that we wanted to complete but didn’t have time or funds for.

Our updates to B20 for competition in 2021 are extensive. Our evolution includes designing an aerodynamic undertray with diffuser, implementing a turbo, switching to electronic shifting and brake bias adjustment, along with a list of further updates which will be covered in our next newsletter as we finalize our designs. These updates and more will be accompanied with comprehensive reliability testing and driver training, maximizing our chances of success next summer. We’re excited to have an extended period to test our car due to reduced manufacturing this season. Despite the setbacks we face, we are optimistic for the future and excited to see how we perform in ten months.

We also want to wish you a safe and healthy fall. With everything happening in respect to COVID, we are more grateful than ever to have you as a part of our community. Thank you again for reading our Autumn 2020 newsletter and for your continued support of our team through these uncertain times.
